BA Hospitality with Events Management student Laura Sprigg is getting a fantastic insight into what it鈥檚 like to work in the hospitality industry thanks to Hogarths Hotel and Restaurant in Solihull.聽
Laura is currently half way through her one year placement at Hogarths. The placement has given her the opportunity to improve her hospitality skills and to put the theory she has learnt from her academic studies into practice.聽
For the first half of her placement, Laura worked in Hogarth鈥檚 Bar 8 Brasserie. Initially starting work as a waitress, she was then given shifts behind the champagne bar and other responsibilities. The job鈥檚 heavy focus on customer service enabled her to develop her confidence with dealing with customers and building a good rapport with them. Thanks to her experience and the helpful Hogarth staff, she is now competent enough to be left on her own to run the restaurant floor with little supervision 鈥 which she feels is a great personal achievement.聽
鈥淚 want to experience all areas in the hotel,鈥 adds Laura, 鈥淪o for the next three months I will be shadowing the Event Managers in the Conference and Banqueting team. By the end of those three months I want to be able to run a wedding of my own.
鈥淔ollowing this, the plan for my last three months will be spending time with Reception and Sales, and then I will return to Bar 8 Brasserie for the busy festive period, learning a little more on what the hotel managers do on a day-to-day basis.鈥澛
Siobhan Chambers, HR Manager at Hogarths, said: 鈥淲e are really proud to be supporting students from UCB and we have developed a great working partnership with them throughout the process. Laura has certainly set the standards very high for future students; she has been a pleasure to work with and will be an asset to any company in the future, but for now we are delighted she is part of our team at Hogarths.鈥
