Bakery and Patisserie Technology students Katie Garrett and Bethany Swift are set to feature on the hit channel-4 show Extreme Cake Makers after assisting at Cake International, a major baking exposition at the NEC.
Katie and Bethany worked tirelessly with high-end cake company Peboyron to produce a six-foot sea horse cake 鈥榮culpture鈥 in aid of the Marine Conservation Society.
鈥淗aving a Channel 4 camera crew around us felt very surreal, and was stressful at times,鈥 said Katie, who worked eight hours straight each day of the event 聽to polish off the masterpiece. 鈥淏ut when the sculpture was finally completed it was amazing to step back and see how far we鈥檇 come. The public were overwhelmed.鈥
Phil and Christine of Peboyron Cakes, a company based in Cornwall specialising in show-stopping wedding and celebration cakes, previously featured on Extreme Cake Makers when they produced a five-foot cake sculpture of a leaping fish. Bringing one ready-made seahorse they had constructed in their Cornwall bakery, Phil and Christine were joined by Channel 4鈥檚 camera crew for the duration of the event, assisted by Katie and Bethany with key elements of the new creation.
鈥淜atie and Beth were phenomenal,鈥 said Phil. 鈥淭hey were professional, helpful, so hard-working and just all kinds of awesome. There鈥檚 no way we could have done it without them.鈥 聽
Bakery and beauty students team up to draw the crowds
UCB鈥檚 official stand at Cake International was flooded with trademark eye-rolls, winks and death stares as guests were helped by Bakery student Jessica Dalton to create their own emoji biscuit toppers. Heads were also turned by Employability Tutor Anna McBartlett鈥檚 delectable dolly mixture make-up look, designed by several Specialist Hair and Media Make-up students and showcased at the event.聽
