"I spent over 26 years serving in the British Army in a wide range of leadership roles. I鈥檝e since transitioned into education and have dedicated myself to teaching, mentoring, and continuing my own studies."

I鈥檓 a Senior Lecturer and MBA Programme Lead here at UCB, and I鈥檓 passionate about helping students unlock their potential. I joined the British Army straight from school, serving for over 26 years in a wide range of roles and across industries such as HR, telecommunications, supply chain, and electronic warfare. I鈥檝e led teams as small as four and managed organisations of up to 1,200 people, focusing on career management and professional development. After leaving the military, I followed my passion for education, completed my PGCE and quickly progressed to become a lecturer and then Programme Director for Sandwell College鈥檚 Professions Academy, overseeing curriculum delivery across 20 courses. That鈥檚 where I discovered my love for teaching and supporting others to reach their goals. I鈥檓 now pursuing a Doctorate in Education, advising both the government and the education sector on future strategies and implementation. My recent paper, 鈥淐an military veterans transition into teaching to help bridge the gap of workforce sustainability in the UK?鈥� reflects my commitment to supporting both veterans and the wider education sector.

In my teaching role at UCB, I bring my real-world industry experiences and give my students practical examples, helping them to see the relevance of theory to real-life challenges. I鈥檓 proud that all my learners to date have achieved distinction grades through their hard work and dedication.

I鈥檓 also proud to lead the MBA hub and the Defence Hub, supporting service members and veterans in gaining qualifications and employment opportunities. I mentor future leaders through the Chartered Management Institute (as a Chartered Companion), serve as an ambassador for the Institute of Supply Chain Management, and advise the Institute of Equality and Diversity Professionals. I鈥檝e been a guest speaker at events such as the Annual Learning and Skills Research Network, sharing my insights into leadership and difficult conversations in the workplace.聽

As I didn鈥檛 take the traditional academic route (and am still continuing my studies to this day), I understand how it feels to be a student, which enables me to offer tailored support. My goal is to help every student develop their strategic thinking, leadership skills, and confidence, so they鈥檙e ready to make a positive impact in any industry.

A big myth I want to bust is that you need to be a senior leader or have prior business experience to succeed in an MBA. In reality, the course is designed for everyone, and it鈥檚 my privilege to see students from all backgrounds thrive and bring unique perspectives to the table. Growing up in a small village in Scotland, I had little academic background until I embarked on my own educational journey later in life. My experiences shaped who I am today, and it鈥檚 why I鈥檓 so passionate about helping others reach their potential. 

Outside of teaching, mentoring and studying (these keep me busy!), I enjoy weight training, boxing, and exploring new cuisines. I鈥檓 also a massive Marvel fan and enjoy listening to podcasts and reading books on leadership, ethics, and personal development.
